I Double-Dare You!

June 1, 2015

Today is June 1st.  June 1st is a holiday, and I bet you do not even know what holiday it is.  I dare you to take a guess...No idea?  June 1st is "Dare Day".

I got the following explanation from holidayinsights.com: "Dare Day is a day to challenge someone, and to do a dare yourself.  It is a day that daredevils truly relish.  Today is definitely a call to action.  It is not a day for procrastinators or for hesitation.

Dares take all forms and shapes.  The type of dare is almost limitless.  Whether it is a prank, a challenge to accomplish something, or a personal action (like asking someone out on a date), this is the day to make the dare, and , it is the day to do the dare. (we do suggest that the dares be safe, and of course, legal...)"

The minute I saw this, I just laughed, ---seriously there is a "Dare Day"!  The first thing that comes to mind are the kind of dares that children throw at each other.  I dare you to eat that worm, or to step on a crack.  Then I started thinking about different things that I might do on a dare, what kind of dare I would ask of others, or how might I dare myself, could I even be daring.

When I read what Dare Day was all about, certain words and phrases jumped out at me.  The phrase - "not a day for procrastinators or for hesitation" was the first one that I noted.  I get so frustrated when I have to deal with procrastinators and those who hesitate, and do you know why?  It is because I am one of them.  If I do not do something right away, it gets lost in the busyness of the day, filed in the back of a mind that loses things, or within a slew of emails or even worse in the void where I put things that I do not enjoy doing or issues that I do not want to acknowledge.  So should I dare myself to give up procrastination and hesitation today? Maybe not, I need to think about that one for a while?!

I am not one to prank others or dare someone to do a prank, with my luck the prank would have a bad ending. But, the idea of challenging someone or myself to accomplish something or taking a personal action, now that has some merit to it.  Isn't this how we should be living our lives? Challenging ourselves to grow and taking on personal actions?  What amazing things can we accomplish!  How much better would we be for completing the dare!

I looked up the word dare in the dictionary, the definition is:  "To have the necessary courage or boldness for something; to be bold enough."  That is what I want, I want to have courage and boldness.  I think about people whom I admire, Christ, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gandhi just to name a few, and I realized that they had courage, they were bold. They dared to take a stand and to act on something that they believed in.  They did not even need a special "Dare Day" to prompt them.

So on this "Dare Day", I dare you! I dare you to accomplish something, to take an action on something important to you and to do it without hesitation. Do you take the challenge?
