Today I met God in the sauna. Really, and it was the most amazing experience.
I had just finished my workout, and was sitting in the sauna breathing in the steam and thinking about my presentation for the retreat. I was still thinking through exactly what I wanted to talk about, and I was going over in my mind, the best way to cover all of the information that I wanted to share. Then, in walks God.
Now, I never imagined God to be a small slim woman in stretch shorts and a sports bra, but that is who came into the sauna. She laid down next to where I was sitting, and just started talking. Nonstop. She shared that she never uses the sauna, but the pool was closed because of the threat of thunderstorms. She shared she was tired from staying up late watching T.V. the night before and kept talking, on and on, and on. As she shared her life, she basically discussed everything that I had been thinking about before she walked in. She shared ways that she was finding time for herself, how she was working out issues with her job, things she learned from her mother and so much more.
As I listened to her, all I could think about is, this is exactly what I needed to hear. Not only hear, but really listen to. Everything that I was trying to work out was laid out in front of me. No question about it, it was God speaking through her to me. I have never seen this women before, and do not know if I will again, but on this day and at this time she was there for me. I truly believe it.
As I think about my encounter today, I remember the movie Oh God!. It was a movie from the 70's which starred George Burns and John Denver. In the movie, George Burns played God and He wanted John Denver to be his modern day messenger on earth. Who would think that God looks like George Burns! The movie ends with God leaving and the John Denver character asks what he should do if he needs to talk with God. God says to him "I'll tell you what, you talk. I'll listen."
And that is what I do. I talk and talk and talk, but I don't always find the time to listen. I get flustered and keep saying God what do you want of me, or what do you want me to do? But, I do not always, wait, or look for his answer. Today, here was his answer where I could not miss it, and it was perfect.
Where do you experience God? Is it in nature, on a beach, in the park? Is it in times of silent meditation, at church, or when you are with your children. Today for me, it was in the sauna and it was amazing!
